Kitty Reunion - A heart warming festive story

I wondered up to the attic today to try and find the school book from Year 7 with the list of what I wanted to be when I grew up. I think it is always important to go back to these resources from your 12 year old self just to check you're on the righ track in life. Anyway, I didn't find the book. So that was the idea for quirky a blog post dismissed.Or, so I thought.

On my way down the attic stairs I was excited to have found my old friend, Kitty. But, something wasn't quite right with Kitty...

K: Hello Jane!!!

J : (Gasp!) Hello Kitty. You look a bit different.

K : No shit.

J : What happened? Is that... is that your ear over there?

K: Don't want to talk about it.

J : Was it mice?

K : Maybe. This happened because you moved to Brighton and never took me with you.

J : I am sorry Kitty. Come here.

K: Ok, I forgive you. Please don't put me in the woodburner.

J : Hahahaa....Ok.

Backstage Photography from 'How to Disappear Completely & Never be found'

My Nikon camera came along with me for the some of the five night run of the play at The Nightingale Theatre in Brighton. I managed to curb my own nerves by taking backstage photos on the third and the last night of our performance. One of my favourite things about taking photographs backstage is capturing the different moods of getting ready, going over lines, mentally preparing or a state of elation. The best photographs for me are when people are completely natural and unaware they are being photographed.

As you may know I am now in my second year of a acting Diploma. Hence, the lack of fashion styling work and less blogging/tweeting! I never seem to have a minute to spare.We are currently doing our first ever theatre production called, 'How to disappear completely and never be found' Yesterday I spent a full day in tech rehearsals and then we had our first night (which was sold out) last night. The play is on for 5 nights and the last night of the run is Monday 12 December. Loving my Thorne's Foods Hamper

I am quite lucky at competitions. I tend to win stuff I really love. Last week I found out I had won the Thorne's Foods hamper competition and was over the moon. I found the competition in the local Friday Ad paper when I had been sat slightly bored in rehearsals.

Today I went to collect my hamper and visit Thorne's Foods for the first time. If you haven't been you must go. Immediately. Jason, the visionary behind the store, was there to greet me and present me with a very impressive hamper. I got educated from where everything had been sourced locally.

I was especially impressed with the green tea range. Anyone who knows me knows I love my tea and I know great tea. I have got great tea by myside as I sit here typing this blog.

Best t'shirt ever? #Fashion #Frida Kahlo

I've been a fan of Frida Kahlo for as long as I can remember. I even have make skirts, customised jackets and put together patchworks with her image on.

When I saw the Frida Kahlo t'shirt in Zara I instantly wanted it. For one reason or another (mainly my hectic work/acting study schedule) I never got around to buying it until sale time and then found it was half price. Bingo! A bargain at £7.99. I wore it for the first time in Dungeness last weekend and it has fast become my favourite t'shirt ever. Don't tell the other t'shirts.

The green trousers in the photo were also a bargain. I found the Zara trousers in a charity shop that was having a half price sale in Hove. I love it when they do that. I bought them for £2.50. Fate.

Everyone loves a bargain.

Photographs taken at the 'Listening Ears' at Dungeness. Trivia: The 'listening ears' or 'acoustic mirrors' were built between 1928 and 1930. The three massive concrete structures formed an experimental early warning system that aimed to detect invading aircraft by focusing sound waves. The site was chosen as being one of the quietest in Britain. Nice.

As I have a West facing room, I don't get the sunshine in the morning which made me start the day over dressed in jeans, trainers and my mustard top. I thought it might rain again.

(That previous paragraph is such 'overshare'. Yet, I will probably leave it in)

My flatmate, with East facing window, then told me it was officially 'boiling outside'. He was right. I made a quick grab for the nearest skirt which was my Parisian charm print skirt. Yes, I really do make these names up myself.

Blogging: The fear and the angst

I always go through some angst with my blog. Questions such as, 'do people really care?' and 'why am i doing this?' often cross my mind. At the end of the day I like having my own piece of the internet to post some stuff because I want to.

As some of you may know I have been blogging, vlogging and generally spreading myself around the internet for the last 7 years.

I love fashion and photography. I like things that make me smile. Not kittens and ponies. Although, I do sometimes smile when a kitten is riding a pony. Sometimes. So anyway that is what you get here, the photography and fashion, not the latter.

Now I have some time off from my acting course for summer I would like to post a bit more on my neglected blog. I used to have no fear about these things.

I have been toiling with the idea of posting to Lookbook.nu. But, I feel too old for Lookbook.nu to the point I am scared to post there. Does that it matter? My own blog is safe for me. Safe from the competition of gorgeous 14 year old Scandinavian girls who are fashion editors, run small vintage online shops in their spare time, and model for their pocket money. God, I love those girls.

In conclusion: My summer resolution is to blog. Blog with no fear. Start sharing some of my life again. I have even opened up the comments again so comment if you feel inclined.

Dungeness is just as cool as I thought it would be

We escaped the Brighton city lights this weekend in search of some inspiration. Midweek I put a pin in a map and picked out Kent. Always fancied myself a bit of Dungeness. Used to hear that Athelete Song and wonder what all the fuss was about.

After an exciting Wikipedia read I saw Dungeness had some Listening Ears/Acoustic Mirrors, some lighthouses, Derek Jarman's house, a nuclear power station and the overall appeal of being extremely desolate. I packed my brightest clothes and a smile.

It didn't disappoint.

Managed to get a couple of shoots done and took some great photographs throughout the weekend including my new self portrait blog photo (see top of the blog) Here are some more shots from the weekend.

*I must point out I am not really a big fan of nuclear power.

Bamboo iPhone cases

Today I was blown away at the site of a bamboo iPhone cover. I never knew they existed. I have done a Google search and found out you can even design your own case! Groovemade has a great range of cases and the option to design your own case.

Now all I need now is an iPhone.

The Great Wall of Vagina

Last weekend I went to see The Great Wall of Vagina at the Brighton Body Casting Studio. It was a perfect way to spend a rainy Sunday afternoon. I highly recommend for you to go too.

The wall took 5 years for sculpture Jamie McCartney to complete. Each panel is life size plus has a theme and description. Included are casts of preganant women, mothers, piercings, examples of male to female and female to male transsexuals plus cancer survivors. Ages range from 18 year old students to a grandmother of 76. I promise you if you see it you'll be fascinated and come out of the gallery enlightened!

The exhibition continues throughout June 2011.

Last years Bike Week was a huge success with hundreds of cyclists across the city getting involved. This year there's the favourite free breakfast if you cycle to work, women's bike rides, free bike doctors and Bike Alley at Preston Park.

She Rides is a new cycling group for the women of Brighton & Hove. There are lots of women using their bikes for commuting, shopping, school runs and weekend leisure and She Rides aims to bring together women who cycle and who want to meet up for relaxed rides over the summer. There are also free bike maintenance courses and other activities to get involved with.

How to remove facial recognition on facebook

Facebook has recently changed settings again. This time they have created facial recognition which scans photos when uploaded and suggests names to tag. If you are not sure you want this feature and want to opt out, here are the instructions on how to do so.

1) Go to your Facebook privacy settings (top left)

2) Click on ‘Customise settings’

3) Under ‘Things others share’ see the option titled ‘Suggest photos of me to friends. When photos look like me, suggest my name’.

4) Click on ‘Edit settings’

5) If Facebook has enabled auto-suggestion of photo tags you will find the option says ‘Enabled’.

6) Change it to "Disabled" to remove facial recognition and
Press ‘OK’

A tiny preview of my day at the Brighton Food Festival 2010

A lovely blue sky greeted us in Brighton today so I made the most of it and headed down to the food festival in search of exotic bounty.

At the Metrodeco stall I was greeted by Helen & Mike. They had a fantastic stall with cakes and tea. I tried a cup of the Parisian mix tea and was supposed to go back after eating to buy some tea but got side tracked - sorry Helen.

Near Jubilee Library I thought I would try out one of these strawberry dessert/cake like things. It got a bit bashed in my bag as you can see. What does it taste like? It is an interesting texture and you can taste the strawberry flavors.

This is the Wealdway goats cheese with cracked black pepper. I raided the samples on the goats cheese stall.

For my lunch I tried a Carribean veg curry with extra side dishes. All in all a successful day for my tummy.

What is Beyond Biba?

Barbara Hulanicki will always be remembered for BIBA, the shop that changed the face of UK fashion in the 1960s and 70s. A phenomenon in the truest sense of the word, BIBA would leave an indelible mark on the minds and wardrobes of the customers who ventured through its doors.

Just as Barbara was a key ingredient in the cultural explosion that occurred in London during the 1960s, she also found herself at the birth of the incredible regeneration of Miami Beach in the late 1980s and 90s. This is where she still resides, and continues to work as one of the most respected interior designers in the United States.

The film provides an invaluable glimpse into Barbara Hulanicki today. A rare insight into the woman herself, her memories of her father's murder, the impossible glamour of Biba, the impact of her husband Fitz on her life, her thoughts on modern America and her refusal to give up and live in the shadow of the past. The film focuses on these elements, and more, to create an all access portrait of an overlooked and elusive artist.

Interviewer: Hello Barbara. When was the last time you were here?
Barbara: I was here (Brighton) not long ago to do a film showing at the college.
Interviewer: Was it the film of Beyond Biba?
Barbara: Yes. I had Molly Parkin interview me. It was a hoot. You will have to see the film.
Interviewer: I think we all have to see the film. The film is on sale at the front of house £15 and there is also a signing. Barbara will be doing a signing at the fornt there
Barbara: I will meet people.
Interviewer: Excellent. So now we will be have a sixty second with Barbara. I didn't tell you about this. Sixty seconds with you. Paper or fabric?

Today at Brighton Fashion Week 2010 I got to meet the fabulous Barbara Hulanicki who was at the event to do a Q&A and talk about the new documentary, 'Beyond Biba'.

Can you believe i have been using Twitter for 2 years now?! I can't.

Looking back there was about 7 of us in the beginning and we knew we should join up for this 'Twitter thing' but we didn't really know why.

I was invited onto the site by one of my many American Youtube friends. I then remember inviting people and the general thoughts or first twitter updates being, "what the hell is the point of all this?"

Not only was i seduced by the fact Stephen Fry was regularly updating on Twitter but i was able to keep up to date in real time with my friends across the world. I have had many a Twitter conversation involving several time zones and a lot of laughs which you can surprisingly get from 140 characters or less. Twitter is a blessing when you have insomnia as there is always someone to talk to.

As i was there early on in Twitters history it has been amazing to see how the site has now become so popular and mainstream. Yet everyday I am still educating people on why they should use Twitter and i know there are still millions of people in the world who haven't got a clue.

I just feel special that i have been there from the beginning and seen the site grow into something really great. I have also made some very cool friends. Very cool.

My aim now is to get 1000 followers by Midnight. Follow me here:

Here is some extra information for anyone who does not wanted to be indexed on Google. (like me) I thought i had all my settings put to private on the highest level but i didn't.

Here is what i got told and what i did in a flash! :

If you don't know, as of today, Facebook will automatically index all your info on Google, which allows everyone to view it. To change this option, go to Settings --> Privacy Settings --> Search --> then UN-CLICK the box that says 'Allow indexing'.
